We have been providing professional contracting services to the Gauteng region and beyond since 1992. From our humble beginnings as a small domestic electrician, owner Schalk Grobler has since grown Grobbies into a multinational corporation that provides a wide range of contracting solutions to its customers.

Although we have grown in leaps and bounds over the past two decades, our ethos remains unchanged. Built on three pillars – Operational Excellence, Product Leadership, and Customer Centricity – Grobbies is known for our innovative solutions and quick turn-around.

Grobbies has partnered with many high-profile customers over the years, including Murray & Roberts, Hitachi, and Kusile Power Station, but we still provide services for domestic projects in Pretoria and surrounds.

The Man Behind the Business

Schalk Grobler

Founder and Owner

Schalk Grobler started his professional career after qualifying as an Electrical Millwright at YSKOR in Newcastle, South Africa in 1989. He accepted a position as an electrician at Maizecor Mills in 1990 where he had the opportunity to further hone his skills.

It was during this time that Schalk gained a new perspective on life.

While working on-site, Schalk came face-to-face with death when his friend and colleague, George Calitz, came in contact with a live breaker. He reacted immediately and carried the lifeless form of his co-worker to the car before driving the 83 kilometres to the nearest hospital. Thanks to Schalk’s quick response, George lived to tell the tale.

The incident inspired Schalk to dream bigger and in 1992, he started Grobbies. At first, Grobbies was just him and his bakkie, but this soon changed. Schalk’s reputation for great work and excellent service began to precede him and the rest, as they say, is history.

Wiremen’s License – 1992

When not at work, Schalk enjoys spending time outdoors and is a keen endurance horseback rider, scuba diver, and 4×4 trail driver. He also enjoys a quiet afternoon playing a round or three of chess.
